of Symbols
LEVEL ACCESS / ACCESS VIA RAMP / STEPS
Indicates the form of entrance to the building.
Level access, via self-opening
entrance door or no door.
If
there is any sloped level change greater than 10cm access is deemed
to be ramped. The ramp symbol should be shown; the steeper the gradient
the harder the ramp is, so state the length and gradient of the ramp.
Access
via steps. If there is a stepped level change greater than 5cm, Access
is deemed to be stepped. The step symbol should be shown. Further details
may be given regarding the size and number of steps.
HANDRAILS
Indicates
grab rail adjacent entrance.
AUTOMATIC OR FIXED OPEN ENTRANCE DOORS
Indicates
that the main entrance doors are automatic or held open.
CAUTION AT ENTRANCE
Detail
in text re entrance e.g. doors heavy/stiff to open. Should be used
if your entrance is via double doors where one is kept shut, but would
be needed to be opened to allow wheelchair access.
INTERNAL WIDTH RESTRICTIONS
Indicates
width restrictions within the building (i.e. less than 1.2 metres).
List in text any restrictions.
INTERNAL RAMPED / STEPPED ACCESS WITHIN FLOOR AREA
Indicates
provision of either ramps or steps within floor levels.
List in text areas/facilities accessed by ramps or steps.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE COUNTER
Indicates
a counter point or desk facility is available no higher than 900mm
to allow wheelchair access.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE CASHPOINT
Indicates
low-level cash point where the height of controls should be no more
than 1 metre from ground level.
FACILITY FOR HARD OF HEARING
Indicates
facilities that may assist hearing aid users, e.g. sound induction
loops.
SEAT AVAILABLE
Indicates
availability of a chair within the premises.
ACCESSIBLE EATING AREAS
Denotes
eating areas where moveable seating is provided thereby allowing wheelchair
manoeuvre around tables. Please note this symbol does NOT indicate
the eating areas have full access for wheelchair users.
CHANGING ROOM WITH GRAB RAILS
Denotes
large changing areas or rooms with grab rails for use by wheelchair
users.
ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
Trained
staff are available to assist disabled persons.
LIFT
Denotes
provision of lift. The location of lift and any other special requirements
(e.g. staff assistance needed) are indicated within the text.
INTERNAL STAIRS
Denotes
staircase to upper or lower storeys. Where possible, details of the
number of steps and the height of each step to be included in the text.
And what facilities are accessed by the stairs.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE TOILET
Indicates
suitable unisex disabled persons public W.C facility (does not have
to be used for accessible bedroom facilities). Unless information is
given to the contrary, the cubicle will be large enough to accommodate
wheelchairs, and incorporate support rails.

Note Assistance Dogs Include Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Support Dogs and Dogs for the Disabled.
